According to the tailoring methods of the 17th century, sleeves were cut in two pieces. This panel corresponds to the under sleeve of a woman’s jacket.

It is worked in an embroidery technique called blackwork, with a single colour of silk, usually black, but also sometimes blue, red or, greenn on linen. Blackwork was particularly popular for dress accessories such as handkerchiefs, coifs, caps, shirts and smocks.

This is a very accomplished example of 17th-century blackwork in the speckling style. The arrangement of tiny running stitches in black mimics the subtle shading of woodblock prints, giving a three-dimensional effect to the pattern. The design is also very skilful in its naturalism, particularly the insects depicted. Grasshoppers, dragonflies, butterflies, moths, caterpillars and beetles, along with a single spider’s web enliven the embroidery.

The effect of blackwork is cleverly achieved in this forehead cloth from about 1625-1650. Instead of using a single colour of silk thread on linen, two threads of mixed white linen and black silk thread are used. These are embroidered in satin stitch and give the effect of speckling found in blackwork.

The central motif, the Pelican in her Piety, was a motif taken from emblem books. These were a popular type of literature in the 16th and 17th centuries, which associated pictures and symbols with mottos and moral poems. The Pelican in her Piety relates to a myth about a pelican feeding her young from the blood of her breast when she could find no food for them. This myth and images of it were associated with Christianity from the 2nd century AD and they figure frequently in emblem books.

By the 1620s, the Pelican in her Piety appears in embroidery pattern books along with the other motifs - animals, insects, fish and human figures - seen on this forehead cloth. Given the lively and naive mixture of images in the design, it is hard to tell if the Pelican was chosen for its symbolism.

Blackwork is a counted-thread embroidery worked in geometric designs with black silk on even-weave linen. Black isn't the only acceptable color for working these patterns (red or scarletwork was also popular).

The Elizabethans frequently called blackwork Spanysshe work, and it was traditionally believed that the craft had come into popularlity with the arrival of Catherine of Aragon at the English court. But in fact, there are references to black silk embroidery on body linen as far back as Chaucer.

The skirt fronts are lined with ivory silk. te collar, cuffs, and bodice front are decorated with braided trim. There are very faint indentations on the skirt fronts, indicating the coat originally had braided trim along the front opening.

The long slender sleeves are capped with elaborately ruched outher sleeves. The bodice and outer sleeve seams are outlined with corded piping. The bodice is high waisted. The skirt is slightly flared in front and full in back. The coat closes in front with concealed silk fabric loops and covered buttons.

Chogori and Ch'ima
Chogori for females have changed over time more than those for males. The earliest versions went all the way to the hips and were tied at the waist. By the late Chosun Dynasty (1392-1910), they only went as far as the arm pits, with a longer front panel to cover the breasts. Dongchong (detachable paper collars) help accent the woman's neck. Like the men's version, they are tied across the chest in front with a bow.

The ch'ima is a rectangular or tubular skirt with a high, pleated waistband. It is tied above the breasts with long sashes. By flowing over the rest of the body, it completely hides the female shape, strongly influenced by the Confucian society. Like the wide-legged paji for males, the billowing ch'ima allows a great deal of freedom for squatting, the preferred position when doing most household chores.

Im getting verry frustrated!!!..aaaahh..
My sewing and patterndrawing skills are not that good that i can make from an janet arnold 1/8 scale pattern (inches) a full women pattern for my body only in cm.
Im taking sewing lessons and next year learn to draw a pattern so i have to be patient.

I bought some cm grid paper..and copied the riding habit pattern. 1 1/8 inch grid(janet arnold)=1 cm grid (copy)
Its going te be small..maybe my daughters BabyBorn doll can wear it hihihi.
But i think its going to help me understand the pattern..and how to sew it together..!

Contouche

Also known as robe à la française, robe battante, robe volante, sack dress. The name is said to be derived from kontush, an Hungarian gown with a pleated back.

The contouche can be seen as having developed from the manteau by letting the folds in back fly loose instead of tacking them down. It started out as neglige in the late 17th century and developed into the robe battante or robe volante ("flying gown") during the Régence (1715-1723).

The robe volante had pleats in back, starting below the shoulders, and a circular skirt which was lifted up in front to reveal the jupe. It was closed in front and pulled over the head. During the Régence, ladies started to wear it outside the house as well, and it could be seen draped over the huge domes of early paniers.

During the 30s, the garment changed its name to robe à la française and was worn open in front, but still much resembled a wrapping gown. While it found its way into formal and court wear, it gradually developed a waist as the front panels and sides were cut and pleated to shape. The front opened over a stomacher or the corset and the jupe.

During the second half of the century, the pleats in back became narrower, so that in fact they were only an addition on an otherwise fitted gown. The extreme was reached with the robe à la piemontaise, where the pleats had degenerated into an appendix fixed to the back of the shoulders. In that shape, the contouche continued as court fashion until the French Revolution, after which it faded into oblivion.

Ik ben er nu 3 keer geweest..en niet erg mijn best gedaan om met een mooi kostuum op de proppen te komen. Vorig jaar was ik als zigeunerin, had ik allerlei kledingstukken overelkaar heen getrokken en mijn haren wild gemaakt. Stond wel mooi hoor.Maar als je dan op de fair loopt en ziet wat een enorme creativiteit sommige mensen hebben..ongelofelijk..Daar zitten maanden werk in denk ik.

Dus ernstig op zoek naar inspiratie hihi en doorzettingsvermogen om er dan ook wat van te maken he!!!!

Friesland en Drenthe, 1780/1900. Getoond worden replicakostuums,
gemaakt in het atelier en tijdens de workshops van het museum,
onder leiding van Hyke en Annebeth Pilat.
Op de replicakostuums worden antieke sieraden en accessoires gedragen.

De presentatie vindt plaats om 14.00 uur in de Ned. Herv. Kerk,
deze kerk ligt schuin tegenover het museum.

Laats heb ik een paspop aangeschaft..maat 42..maar was natuurlijk niet zoals mijn lichaam eruit ziet. Met wat fiberfill een bh de maten aangepast. Een getailleerd grondpatroon getekend en genaaid..zo lijkt het wat netter. Ben benieuwd of het werkt zo.

Mary I was Queen of England from 1553 until her death. She was a cousin, once removed, of Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary is remembered for temporarily reversing the English Reformation and returning England to roman Catholicism. To this end, she had hundreds of religious dissenters executed, earning her the name Bloody Mary. Her plan to remove her half-sister Elizabeth from the line of succession failed when Mary’s marriage to Philip II of Spain produced no offspring. Her religious policies, however, were mostly reversed by her successor, Elizabeth I.

In 1649 following the English Civil War, his father Charles I had been executed and the monarchy abolished. In 1660, shortly after Cromwell's death, the monarchy was restored under Charles II. She was the grandmother of Queen Victoria, and the great-great-great-great grandmother of the current Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Charlotte was a patroness of the arts, known to Johann Christian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, among others. She was also an amateur botanist who helped establish Kew Gardens.
